Intro: The Monsanto winery is owned by the Bianchi family. Father, Fabrizio and daughter, Laura manage the Winery today.
Castello di Monsanto owns some of the best vineyard sites within the appellation and is home to the largest reserves of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. In 1962, Fabrizio Bianchi founded the winery. That same year, pioneering Monsanto was the first winery to make a Chianti Classico Cru from the single ‘Il Poggio’ vineyard and worked to eliminate white grapes from Chianti Classico Riserva blend. Further, in 1981 Monsanto harvested the first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Nemo, from the Il Mulino vineyard.

Description: Born in the vineyard “Il Mulino” at 260 metres a.s.l., planted in 1976 with only Cabernet Sauvignon. Its name comes from the famous saying “Nemo propheta in patria” which in those years – the first harvest was in 1982 – was well-suited to the avant-garde and pioneristic spirit of the company.

Vinification: Select grapes are hand harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. After the vinification in steel, it ages for 18 months in oak barriques and ages another year in glass.

Flavours: Opulent notes of black currant, cassis, black cherry and black peppermingle, leading to a long, silky finish. A powerful, polished, singular Cabernet.

Food Pairings: Well matched with roasts, red meats, game, hearty stews, rich pasta entrées and soft cheeses. - See more at:

Review: Antonio Galloni's VINOUS.COM score: 93/100
JAMES SUCKLING.COM score: 92 points
Lots of ripe and flavorful fruit here with raspberry, blueberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Very bright and clear. Full-bodied, yet linear and long. A pure cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.
